Pill popping peelers are on the rise across the North with coppers suffering from stress after the recent dissident republican killings, a medical source admitted last night.
And the source said GPs were having to see more cops in their daily surgeries worried about their personal security.
The medical source claimed there was a 'who might be next' mentality among bobbies on the beat, concerned that republican dissidents were preparing to launch further murder bids on coppers both on and off duty.
The source confessed: "There has been an alarming increase in the number of police officers seeking medication and counselling in the aftermath of the killings of the two soldiers and the police officer.
"Overall, there is a tremendous anxiety as to who might be next as a target for these terrorists."
The warning from the medical profession about the number of cops popping pills comes as a British intelligence source revealed that Northern security forces were "greatly worried" the next prime target for republican dissidents would be an off-duty Catholic copper.
He said: "I know there has been a lot of speculation in the media as to who the terrorists will target next, ranging from a Protestant politician to members of Sinn Féin.
"However, our analysis would be the most likely group at risk would be Catholic members of the PSNI.
"Dissident republicans would really like to try and drive a wedge between the nationalist community and the police.
"To do this, such dissidents must try and drive Catholics either out of the PSNI or discourage them from joining the police in the first instance.
"This was a favourite tactic of PIRA and the INLA – kill Catholics in the RUC to support the propaganda the police are a Protestant force bolstering up an Orange state.
"Regretfully, the security forces personnel who have been killed, have died on duty. It is clear the dissidents want to kill a police officer off duty at his or her own home – preferably a Catholic."
And the intelligence source also revealed there was an upsurge among squaddie wives who want their soldier hubbies to transfer out of the North.
One peeler birdie has been chirping gossip that the new batches of coppers are nervous about going out on patrol since the recent attacks.
Apparently, while they are quite skilful in the use of handguns, since the formation of the PSNI, training in machine guns and rifles has become almost non existent.
This has fuelled allegations a large number of young peelers don't want to go out on the beat in case they encounter dissident republicans brandishing the notorious AK47 Russian assault rifles, once dubbed the Widow Makers.
