Orangemen should back Scot crusade - vote could increase power

(John Coulter, Irish Daily Star)

The Irish Orange Order needs to back the campaign for Scottish independence.

Scotland's First Minister, the Scottish National Party boss Alex Salmond, is one of the cleverest political leaders on these islands.

He knows that no matter what the outcome of next Spring's Commons General Election, a referendum on Scottish independence will almost certainly result in increased powers for the Scottish Parliament.

So why can't the Irish Orange Order follow SNP thinking and use Salmond's campaign to secure the future of a Northern Assembly?

Even the Welsh nationalists have jumped on the bandwagon of Scottish independence to get more concessions from their English overlords for the Welsh Assembly.

Okay, I know I'm still recovering from the shock of learning that some of my Scottish ancestors were slaughtered by Scottish supporters of King Billy at the infamous Glencoe Massacre in 1692.

But I haven't turned into a raving Jacobite traitor. The reality which all Irish Orangemen need to face is that there's not going to be a united Ireland in the near future because the Republic is next to bankrupt.

Southern republicans simply cannot afford us Northern Unionists. But with the Northern Assembly on its last legs over policing and justice, Unionists urgently need a cunning plan to ensure the return of devolved powers.

If we Unionists could get family unity sorted out, joint authority might not be too bad – at least it would give us a say in the running of the Republic.

With a pan-nationalist front quietly emerging between the Shinners and the SDLP, Unionists will need to box even more smartly in 2010.

The Republic is no longer the feared launching pad for terror attacks by the Provos and INLA. The South is politically ripe for the plucking for Northern Unionists.

It's not a case of standing Unionists candidates for the Dáil or the Senate. That will never work numerically.

Financially, politically – and especially religiously – the Republic is at its weakest since partition.

We Unionists need a say in the running of the South. The power of the Catholic bishops has finally been broken with the pervert priest scandals.

Here's the initial shopping list for Unionists for 2010. No more hiding perverts in the confessional.

Let convicted priests face the full rigor of the law; be defrocked and excommunicated from Rome.

Bring back the death penalty in the Republic for convicted killers. At the stroke of a pen, the return of the rope will have every Right-wing Unionist dancing to join the South.

But Unionists still need their own Northern Parliament. If Super Alex secures greater Home Rule for Scotland, then Unionists should demand and even more powerful Stormont.

We Unionists need a Stormont, where like Westminster, the largest grouping forms the Government.

In the new Stormont, the largest grouping will form the government, and the opposition will come from the second largest grouping.

Okay, so I'm talking about the return of majority rule under another title. But it worked.

The price may be the dumping of the Act of Settlement which guarantees only a Protestant bum may grace the English Throne.

Brown or Cameron – you give us Northern Home Rule; we give you a Papist monarch, and you make PR compulsory in all elections.

Wonder what the one million Far Right British National Party voters in Britain will say to that?
