Only loyalists will decide when it's over – UUP

(Irelandclick.com)

Only loyalist paramilitaries themselves will decide when the feud is over, a top North Belfast Ulster Unionist politician claimed.

So far the feud has claimed three lives and major disputes have broken out between warring UVF and LVF factions in Holywood, Co Down and Garnerville in East Belfast.

"Paramilitaries will be the only ones to call it a day," Fred Cobain said.

"I think politicians have very little influence in these things. They [paramilitaries] have their own agenda.

"We've had all this before with the UDA and UVF murdering each other. They cause huge chasms in the unionist community and take a very long time to heal.

"Any feud has consequences for the people who live in that community. They are essentially living in fear.

"As far as I am concerned, the quicker this is over, the better."

Figures released on Wednesday from the British Irish Rights Watch have stated that loyalists were responsible for 25 assaults and 19 shootings between April and June of this year, and before the most recent feud began. Republicans, it said, were responsible for 11 assaults and two shootings for the same period.

The MLA who sits on the North and West Belfast Parades Forum, also said the feud between the UVF and LVF had been brewing for the past five years.

In January 2000 the tensions between the LVF and the UVF led to a bloody feud when UVF leader Richard Jameson was shot dead in Portadown. The UVF blamed the LVF for his death.

"I think this has been brewing since Jameson was shot in Portadown. It's been brewing that long. Now, we need it ended as quickly as possible."

The PSNI is spending £30,000 a day dealing with the feud.

Stephen Paul (28) was gunned down outside his North Belfast home on July 30.

Craig McCausland (22) was also shot nearby. Jameson Lockhart (25) was killed at the wheel of his lorry in East Belfast last month.
