SDLP justice spokesman Alban Maginness has said the British government should live up to its commitment on a Finucane inquiry, as it is doing on demilitarisation.
"I welcome the explicit measures of normalisation and demilitarisation announced by Peter Hain now that the Provisional movement has finally declared its intention of living up to its obligations.
"These measures were covered by explicit commitments the British government made in the Joint Declaration in 2003," he said.
"However, these were not the only commitments made by the British government.
"There was an equally explicit commitment to support a proper inquiry into the murder of Pat Finucane if it was recommended by Judge Peter Cory.
"Yet what we got was rushed legislation to prevent the full truth about the murder coming out.
"How can we have true normalisation if any party, and particularly a government, can cherry-pick which commitments it wants to follow through on?
"It is important for the whole concept of a lawful society that government should honour its promises. There must be a full public judicial inquiry into this murder."
