SF MLA calls on Dodds for Belfast meeting

(Irelandclick.com)

Sinn Féin MLA Michael Ferguson has called on the DUP's Diane Dodds to meet with him and other community representatives following attack on homes in two parts of Belfast.

Two men were arrested on Saturday following a sectarian attack on the homes of Protestant families in the Ringford area of West Belfast on Friday night.

One was arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage, the other for disorderly behaviour. On Friday night, a Catholic home in Mountainview, close to Ardoyne, was attacked by loyalists who threw a blast bomb at the house.

Diane Dodds visited the Blacks Road to meet with residents but yesterday (Sunday) Michael Ferguson claimed her actions "don't go far enough".

"With election to office comes responsibility," he said. "When dealing with peace and reconciliation and conflict resolution, that means taking a hands on approach and giving leadership as we have done in both North and West Belfast in an attempt to deal with the Orange marches. I am asking Diane Dodds on the one hand to meet with me and other community representatives from the Blacks Road to address the ongoing conflict there that began when a 100 strong group of loyalists went into Lenadoon on July 11.

"On the other hand I would ask Diane to encourage the Orange Order to meet with their Catholic neighbours from Mountainview and Ardoyne to undermine the behaviour of loyalists who inflict mayhem on Catholics during the marching season every year.

"It is not enough for Diane Dodds to simply drive into an area and to make statements of condemnation.

"We must both condemn attacks from whatever side and then she must join with me in taking responsible action to bring such attacks to an end."

Nationalist community workers say their colleagues on the Blacks Road side of the interface couldn't be reached by mobile phone when violence broke out on 11 July.
