The Chinese community are too soft. They should close their restaurants and
carry-outs in Belfast's Donegall Pass this weekend. Let all those who feel
their British culture is so under threat go without their curry chips and
chicken and black bean sauce.
What sort of hypocrites queue for food to feed their families, and then
object to those cooking and serving it having basic facilities?
They mustn't have much faith in British culture if they think it's at risk
from a Chinese community centre. The Chinese are hardly a dangerous,
revolutionary lot.
As Anna Lo said they have been here decades, they stuck it out through the
Troubles, and yet that's still not good enough. Chinese people are quiet
and hard-working. They keep themselves to themselves.
What sensible person could possibly object to a building which would include
a nursery and a lunch club for old people? In their community centre, the
Chinese planned to carry out the very subversive activity of holding English
classes.
DUP councillor Ruth Patterson's comments that the Chinese should consider a
different site are disgraceful. Of course, a politician should listen to
their community's fears but they also have a duty to take the lead and
educate on sensitive issues.
It should be remembered that the Chinese, who have been here for three
generations, are part of the community too. At a time when the DUP is
challenging its stereotyping as a party of bigots, Patterson has taken a
most unfortunate stance.
