Cops probe 'illegal' SF collections
(Suzanne Breen, Sunday World)
Police are investigating an alleged illegal 'Money for Martin' collection for the Sinn Féin presidential candidate.
Party members are flooding the streets of Derry with plastic sweet jars sporting the official election photo of the Sinn Féin politician.
"They've been shaking these sweet jars under people's noses and asking for money to fund McGuinness's presidential campaign," a resident said.
"This has been going on for the past three weeks. It's annoying because Sinn Féin is the richest party in the North and people are struggling to make ends meet especially now."
Angry Derry residents contacted the Sunday World claiming they believed that at least some of these collections were illegal as the Sinn Féin activists involved hadn't applied for permits from the PSNI.
On Friday afternoon, a Creggan couple said a collection was taking place outside the Credit Union in Abbey Street.
A police spokesman later said that officers had visited Abbey Street and spoken to a man collecting for Sinn Féin there. They asked him to produce a permit for the collection which he was "unable to do".
The cops then seized the collection box containing cash for McGuinness's campaign. A police investigation is underway.
