We already knew the DUP was no friend to the gay community. The ban on same sex marriages, gay blood, and the proposed conscience clause showed the party certainly wasn't progressive.
But Jim Well's assertion that children in homosexual households are more likely to be sexually abused is in another league.
Even those unlikely to march in a pride parade know that what he said was beyond the pale.
He has since apologised for the remarks which he says do not represent his views nor those of the DUP. Nevertheless, his comments at the hustings were despicable and, most importantly, untrue.
All the evidence says that most child abuse is carried out by heterosexuals, male heterosexuals.
The NSPCC says men are responsible for 73% of cases of severe physical abuse against children and 95% of cases of sexual abuse.
So the safest physical place for a child is actually in a lesbian household. But don't expect the DUP to follow the evidence and propose that more kids be raised by two women.
The scariest aspect of what Jim Wells said is that his remit as Health Minister includes dealing with child sex abuse.
He's so clearly consumed by his own anti-gay prejudices that it's impossible to have confidence in him in this issue.
If any government minister in Britain made these remarks, they'd be toast. But this is Northern Ireland where nobody resigns.
Jim Wells certainly didn't cover himself in glory when the story broke on social media. He said he's been misrepresented. Thankfully, a recording of his remarks put paid to that claim and stopped him being able to duck and dive a way out.
There's no point in his apology. It's just damage limitation when such sentiments are in his heart.
On a personal level, I've always liked Jim Wells. An animal rights' activist and a vegetarian in a party of red-blooded meat eaters, he was always his own man.
But that can't excuse his bigoted, crass comments. Mike Nesbitt should be cringing with embarrassment that he's climbed into bed with such folk. Gay equals paedophile is hardly the message the UUP leader wants tainted with.
As news of Jim Wells' comments spread on social media on Thursday night, DUP politicians said nothing. There was one alone, South Antrim MLA Pam Cameron, who swiftly and strongly disassociated herself from his remarks.
By staying silent, the rest showed that DUP dinosaurs aren't extinct.
