Rise in republican paramilitary attacks

(Simon Doyle, Irish News)

Paramilitary-style shootings carried out by republicans so far this year have increased slightly from the same period in 2002, police statistics show.

Latest police figures showed that the number of republican shootings from the start of the year until August 10 rose by three from the total for the same period last year.

Republican groups have carried out 42 paramilitary-style shootings compared to 39 during the same period in 2002.

The same statistics revealed that loyalist groups carried out 53 shootings so far this year, a reduction of 26 from last year's August 10 total of 79.

Not included in the latest statistics is an incident in which a 30-year-old man was shot once in each calf in the Ardoyne area of north Belfast.

The victim was walking down an alleyway at the rear of Etna Drive off Alliance Avenue on Friday night when he was approached by two men who dragged him into a garden before shooting him.

The murder of Danny McGurk, who was shot dead at his west Belfast home on Sunday, is also not included.

It was unclear whether the killing was a paramilitary-style attack that went too far.

Assaults carried out by both loyalist and republican groups have, meanwhile, dropped to date this year when compared to the same period in 2002.

Assaults by loyalist groups totalled 52 while republicans have been blamed for 25.

The figures for the same period last year showed that loyalists and republicans carried out 65 and 29 assaults respectively.
