FAIR file could lead to revisit of murder scenes

(Suzanne McGonagle, Irish News)

The police may revisit some of the scenes of murders committed by the IRA, it was claimed last night (Friday).

Families Acting for Innocent Relatives (FAIR), have claimed that police will carry out the visits after studying a dossier given to them by the group in 2001 which is believed to include the names of IRA members responsible for more than 70 murders.

Fair spokesman Willie Frazer said police who met representatives of the group on Thursday to discuss the dossier, confirmed that several of those mentioned had been convicted of paramilitary offences.

However, a police spokeswoman did not confirm that murder scenes were to be revisited but said the PSNI had "agreed to re-examine some particular issues raised during the course of the meeting".

Mr Frazer said the group was happy with the outcome of the meeting.

"In a positive and productive meeting, police confirmed that several of those mentioned in the dossier had been convicted of terrorist offences," he said.

"It was stressed to us that these cases remain open and the police are eager to secure convictions and in the interests of that certain information could not be released as it might prejudice future trials of those responsible.

Mr Frazer said the police agreed that they would revisit crime scenes in an effort to secure new evidence.

"Fair representatives were satisfied that their dossier had been a positive contribution to the police investigations of these murders," he said.

"In what can be described as a major step in the pursuit of justice, police have agreed to follow up a number of actionable points and lines of inquiry including revisiting scenes of crimes in an effort to secure new forensic evidence."

A police spokeswoman said: "We can confirm that representatives of Families Acting for Innocent Relatives (Fair) met a senior detective in Newry on Thursday July 31 2003.

"The meeting was described as good. Police provided answers to a series of questions. Some questions could not be answered for legal reasons but explanations were provided as to those specific reasons.

"The PSNI have agreed to re examine some particular issues raised during the course of the meeting. A further meeting is anticipated in due course."
