Ian Paisley, speaking in Brussels on European business, forewent diplomatic niceties about Richard Haass's visit to Northern Ireland.
"This is his farewell. He's out of the equation altogether, and I don't think we have any tears to shed about his going," he said.
"I found him very, very favourable to the IRA, very favourable to keeping them in government, very favourable to have them in there, even though they held onto their guns. I think his attitude was totally disgraceful."
Peter Robinson, speaking after a "useful" breakfast meeting with Mr Haass, recognised the need for good relations with the US.
He said: "He has always treated us with respect, and that is not something which has come with the election result...
"We recognise that there is an interest, a genuine interest on the part of people.
"The Americans can ensure that they aren't holding the hand of just one party in Northern Ireland.
"There has been a tendency in the past for Sinn Féin/IRA to be given a leg-up by Americans, and I don't detect that is their present position, and that's welcome."
