DUP eager to snap up SDLP posters

(Barry McCaffrey, Irish News)

SDLP posters urging people to 'Stop the DUP' are fast becoming much sought-after election trophies among supporters of Ian Paisley's party.

The SDLP erected hundreds of the posters, which were styled as road signs, during the assembly election.

As part of its campaign the party also used hundreds of posters picturing Mr Paisley and his son Ian jnr, with the warning "Two Good Reasons to Vote SDLP". But DUP supporters are now said to be snapping up the anti-Paisley posters and asking the DUP leader to autograph them as a memento of the party's election success.

East Antrim DUP assembly member Sammy Wilson last night confirmed that the anti-DUP posters could now become the most popular gift among party supporters this Christmas. Mr Wilson said he was aware that a number of DUP party branches were hoping to auction off SDLP posters, signed by Mr Paisley, for party fundraising.

"Certainly we were very happy about the posters," he said.

"I know Dr Paisley was more than pleased about them.

"I have been inundated by people asking me if I could get my hands on any of the posters.

"They are being seen as election trophies and a sign of a historic victory for the DUP.

"I intend to get one myself if I can. If the SDLP has any spare posters we would be more than happy to take them off their hands.

"As far as I know the demand is overwhelming."

But last night (Friday) the SDLP defended its attempts to highlight what it believed was the threat posed by the DUP.

The party signalled that not enough pro-agreement voters had heeded the warning.

"Our posters warned people before the election about the dangers posed to the Good Friday Agreement by the DUP," an SDLP spokesman said.

"Others said that the DUP were not a problem, but our warnings have proved correct.

"The DUP do want to destroy the GFA and we must stop them."

However, in an ironic twist, the DUP's own posters, citing unionist fears that Sinn Féin's Gerry Kelly could become the minister for justice, are now said to be a prized possession among republicans in Mr Kelly's north Belfast constituency.
