Johnny Adair was moved to an isolation wing in Maghaberry prison last night amid claims that his life was at risk.
It is understood that Adair, who was returned to jail on January 10, was told yesterday afternoon that he was being moved for his own protection.
Adair is understood to have lodged a formal complaint at his move to Mourne House normally used for women prisoners and immigrant detainees.
But Adair's ally John White last night hit out at the decision and claimed that the Shankill loyalist was being victimised.
"He did not ask to be moved and sees this as another attempt to victimise him.
"He is being denied any social interaction with other prisoners and is not being allowed to attend classes or the gym.
"I have spoken to Johnny's legal team and we will hopefully challenge this in the courts in coming days."
A Prison Service spokesman refused to comment.
