Sinister attacks must end now

(Editorial, Irish News)

A wave of attacks in Belfast on Wednesday night clearly demonstrates that the incarceration of Johnny Adair has not ended the loyalist feud.

Pipe bombs exploded outside two bars in north Belfast while another device was defused at a social club on the lower Shankill.

Shots were also fired at police and a blank handgun and ammunition were later discovered by security forces.

It is clear that certain elements are trying to heighten tension and keep the loyalist feud simmering regardless of the fact that this internecine warfare has brought nothing but death and misery.

In another incident yesterday, a crude anti-personnel bomb was sent to the headquarters of the Northern Ireland Prison Service at Stormont.

It is not yet known who was responsible for this attack, but it must be regarded as a reckless attempt to injure or intimidate those who work in the prison service.

Fortunately no one was hurt on this occasion, but all such incidents are highly sinister and cause widespread fear.

There can be no justification for any of the violence which is occurring on our streets and those behind it should cease immediately.
