Dissident's girlfriend flees home

(Irish News)

The girlfriend of a dissident republican who accused the IRA of trying to murder him has been forced to flee her north Belfast home.

A crowd carrying placards calling for the woman to leave the area reportedly gathered outside her Glen Park Court home on Friday evening.

She was not in the property at the time, however. She told the BBC she had been shocked because those protesting were from the Oldpark area.

"That's me away from it. I've lived there six years with not a bit of trouble, apart from when loyalists pipe-bombed me," she said.

Her 32-year-old boyfriend – a self-proclaimed dissident republican – was shot in the foot and leg last Thursday by men he claims were from the IRA.

The incident occurred in an alley close to the Oldpark Road in north Belfast as the man made him way home from work.

It is understood the man's brother has also been the victim of a paramilitary-style attack for which loyalists were blamed at the time.
