Parades decision sparks outrage

(Simon Doyle, Irish News)

Nationalists last night said they were outraged after the Parades Commission ruled that two loyal order parades could walk past a north Belfast flashpoint.

Two bands were yesterday granted permission to march past the flashpoint Ardoyne shops while on their homeward route from the main Tour of the North parade next Friday.

Sinn Féin councillor Margaret McClenaghan said the commission's determination "defied logic".

"What we have now is two separate marches, at two separate times, coming to march past a sensitive interface," she said. "This parade serves no other purpose than to heighten tensions."

Meanwhile, the Garvaghy Road Residents Coalition last night dismissed reports that the group had boycotted talks aimed at resolving the Drumcree dispute.

"There has been no process in relation to the issue since the closure of the process at the end of 2001," a spokesman for the coalition said.

"If there have been any form of discussions in recent times, then they have clearly been discussions from which the Garvaghy Road Residents Coalition was excluded."
