Shadow of the Troubles lingers

(Bimpe Fatogun, Irish News)

The vast majority of people in Northern Ireland remain preoccupied with the Troubles, according to a new government study.

The latest research from the Northern Ireland Office examines people's attitudes to their place within the conflict in the north.

Researchers found that fewer people amongst the younger generation classed themselves as victims compared with those in middle age.

Just nine per cent of those questioned in the 18-24 age group and 13% in the 25-34 age group said they often/very often perceived themselves as victims, compared with 31% in the 35-44 age group and 24% in the 55-64 age group.

One of the report's authors, Professor Ed Cairns, said he believed this reflects the fact that the population has been living in "relatively peaceful times" recently.

"It has been quite some time since the first IRA ceasefire and they have lived in relatively peaceful times. In a way people haven't even noticed as we moved so imperceptibly into this new era," he said.

The report has also revealed that while a majority of those questioned were in favour of a built memorial for all victims and some sort of truth commission, there were more Catholics in favour of the proposals than Protestants.
