A firm strike for integrated education

(Aeneas Bonner, Irish News)

Clones Cyclone Barry McGuigan blew into Enniskillen yesterday to weigh in behind supporters of integrated education.

The former world boxing champ was guest at the prizegiving and 10th anniversary celebrations of Erne Integrated College, which has been holding screenings of his famous bouts for pupils.

Principal Tom Noble said his rise to world featherweight champion back in 1985 had really unified communities in Northern Ireland.

"This, combined with his personal values of courage, decency, integrity and dedication, make him a brilliant role model for the young people of this school, as well as a brilliant ambassador for the integrated education movement," he said.

"Even though he was boxing before some of the pupils were born, when asked, the majority of students not only knew who he was, but were also already big fans.

"In preparation for the visit we have held screenings of his famous fight for all pupils. We are honoured to have him visit our school."

Mr McGuigan, who is a patron of the Northern Ireland Council for Integrated Education (NICIE), said he was a firm supporter of integrated schools.

"Children learn to appreciate the value of their own distinct identities, while at the same time respecting religious and diversity amongst their peers," he said.

"Knowledge feeds an understanding, which fosters tolerance, helping to create a more assimilated society free from corrosive prejudice."

Erne opened in Drumacoo on the edge of Enniskillen in 1994, and currently has 341 pupils. There are 50 integrated schools across Northern Ireland, educating around 5% of all children.
