The death threat against a member of Fermanagh District Policing Partnership is a deplorable act by a cynical and cowardly minority.
Independent member Cathal O'Dolan resigned after the Real IRA said it would execute him if he continued his involvement in the DPP.
Mr O'Dolan was placed in an appalling position and there will be widespread sympathy for him and his family.
The decision he arrived at must have been extremely difficult but is understandable in the circumstances.
It is disgraceful that someone who came forward to perform a public service and provide the very accountability that republicans and nationalists have long demanded, should be forced off by intimidation.
Several members of DPPs and the Policing Board have been targeted in recent months and the question of personal security needs to be addressed.
It is vital that those who have decided to serve on the new policing bodies receive wholehearted support.
They are representing the public in ensuring that the police deliver an effective service to local communities.
Given the high level of concern at criminal activity, it is clear the district policing partnerships have a key role to play.
This performance of civic duty on behalf of everyone stands in stark contrast with the negative, violent and destructive behaviour of the dissidents who display a shameful disregard for democracy and human rights.
And while these threats are disturbing and depressing, it is essential that the important work being done by the policing bodies is not undermined by people whose idea of reasoned argument is threatening to kill those with whom they disagree.
