Hope meeting will move probe forward

(William Scholes, Irish News)

The detective leading the investigation into the murder in 1974 of Co Tyrone nationalist councillor Patsy Kelly yesterday met the family's solicitor for the first time since the inquiry started.

Mr Kelly's family and their solicitor Pat Fahy refused to cooperate with Detective Superintendent Andrew Hunter after he publicly launched his investigation in July without first informing them.

Speaking after a two hour meeting with Mr Hunter and another senior detective at his office, Mr Fahy said the investigation team had "been busy".

"However, they are still not dealing with the issues we have raised with them," he said. "They updated me on the progress of their inquiries and they seem to have taken a lot of steps.

"Whether or not they lead anywhere remains to be seen," he added.

Mr Kelly, a father of four who died without knowing that his wife Teresa was pregnant with their fifth child, was killed as he drove home from the bar he managed in Trillick on July 24 1974.

Police launched a new investigation into the murder at the end of July against a background of claims that the 33-year-old was murdered by a UDR patrol, that the RUC botched the original investigation and that security forces subsequently colluded to keep the killers out of jail.

Mrs Kelly has said she has "no faith" in the investigation and called for an independent inquiry. A judicial review of the PSNI's decision not to bring an independent police force in to investigate the case is due to be heard on September 26.

Mr Fahy added that posters had recently appeared in Trillick which attacked the reputation of Mr Kelly and himself.

"Posters have appeared on telegraph poles and so on in the village claiming that Patsy Kelly was a member of Sinn Féin and that he was involved in the murder of a UDR soldier in the area," he said.

"Patsy Kelly was not a member of Sinn Féin and he certainly was not involved in any murder."
