Marathon bomb put lives at risk

(Editorial, Irish News)

It is difficult to fathom the thinking of those who planted a bomb on the route of yesterday's (Monday) Belfast marathon.

The individuals who planned and carried out this reckless act must have known they were putting the lives of many men, women and children in danger.

The marathon is a major annual event which attracts thousands of entrants and spectators. It also promotes the sporting ideal, raises significant funds for charity and projects a positive image of the city.

Those who targeted this event aimed to undermine everything it represents.

However, the anger and disgust expressed by the many people caught up in yesterday's security alert, shows there is no support for any individual or group who wish to drag us back to a time when bombers routinely caused death, injury and destruction.

There is no possible justification for targeting the marathon or any participants.

And while this despicable act will raise issues about security, it is vital that people are not deterred from taking part in the event in future.
