'One in four Orange halls attacked' claim

(Irish News)

One in four Orange halls in the Portadown district have been attacked in the last six months, the Orange Order has claimed.

In the latest incident, arsonists caused minor damage to Ballylisk Orange Hall on Tandragee Road, Portadown, early yesterday (Tuesday) morning.

The rear door was set alight, windows were broken and fire lighters were used to start a separate fire inside the premises igniting a curtain and causing smoke damage.

Firefighters, who were called at about 3am, contained the outbreak.

The Orange Order's grand secretary Drew Nelson has already said that a highly organised campaign is being waged to destroy Orange halls.

Mr Nelson made his comments after attacks last month on a hall in Ballinderry and Ballyworkan Orange Hall in Portadown. Ballylisk Orange Hall is about a mile from Ballyworkan.

"The security minister Paul Goggins visited the hall in the aftermath of the attack. It seems clear to us that this nearby hall was deliberately targeted after the visit by people who have no fear of detection," a spokesman said last night.

"In the last six months a quarter of Orange Halls in Portadown district have been the subject of serious attacks.

"We had hoped that the new year would see an end to these attacks but clearly the orchestrated campaign against our halls and Protestant culture has not stopped."

Since 1971, he added, there have been 287 arson attacks on Orange Halls and 50 have been completely destroyed. In 2007, 27 halls were targetted by arsonists.
